Overview
Rara Lake is Nepal’s largest and deepest lake, with an area of 10.8 sq. km at an altitude of 2,990 meters. The beautiful, serene lake is surrounded by an enchanting forest of blue pine, oaks, firs, and Himalayan spruce, creating an excellent habitat for mountain wild animals and exotic birdlife. This tranquil environment is part of Rara National Park, the smallest national park in the country, covering an area of 106 sq. km. Located in Nepal’s Far West within the Karnali Zone, it spans the districts of Mugu and Jumla, an ancient kingdom of the Malla regime. The Nepali language originated in this region, which is populated by Hindu tribes, including the Malla Thakuri, Rokyas Chhetris, and Dalits.
The Rara Lake Trek begins with a swift panoramic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj city airport in Nepal’s Far South West. The journey continues with a flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla, the headquarters of the Jumla district, located in the mountainous and hilly region of Nepal’s Far North West. From Jumla, the adventurous trek takes you through remote countryside and hill farm villages, offering stunning views of the Himalayas, diverse landscapes, and a unique cultural experience.
